007: First Light Won’t Launch on Nintendo Switch 2 in May, Pushed to Summer

IO Interactive’s highly anticipated James Bond game, 007: First Light, will miss its planned day-one release on Nintendo Switch 2. While the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC versions remain locked in for their May 27 launch, the studio confirmed that Switch 2 players will have to wait until later this summer to get their hands on the spy thriller.

The delay was first reported by insider Graczdari before being officially confirmed on the game’s social media channels. IO Interactive did not elaborate on the specific reasons behind the postponement but assured fans that the team is committed to delivering the “best game experience possible across all platforms,” according to GameSpot. No firm release date for the Switch 2 edition has been announced beyond the vague summer window.

This isn’t the first schedule shake-up for First Light. The game was originally slated for a March 2026 release before being pushed back to May for quality-related reasons. The project has also drawn some scrutiny over inconsistent PC system requirements published earlier this year, though a recent 10-minute developer diary appeared to put concerns about the game’s overall quality to rest.

IO Interactive’s track record on Nintendo’s newest hardware adds some context to the delay. The studio previously brought Hitman: World of Assassination to Switch 2, but that launch was marred by a series of technical issues that required multiple post-release patches. It’s possible the developer wants to avoid a repeat of that rocky debut with its flagship Bond title.

First Light is far from the only title struggling to meet its Switch 2 launch targets. Gearbox has paused development on the Switch 2 version of Borderlands 4 entirely, raising questions about whether that port will ever materialize. Disney Dreamlight Valley’s latest update has also been delayed for both Switch and Switch 2, suggesting that developing for Nintendo’s new console continues to present challenges for studios across the industry.

Despite the platform hiccup, excitement for 007: First Light remains strong. The game reimagines James Bond’s origin story, with actor Patrick Gibson stepping into the role of the iconic spy and Lenny Kravitz portraying a villain. IO Interactive has drawn inspiration from action-adventure benchmarks like Uncharted and the Batman: Arkham series, blending its signature stealth expertise from the Hitman franchise with more cinematic, explosive set pieces.
