Highguard’s Episode 2 Update Unleashes Shapeshifting Wolf Hero Ekon, New Map, and Ranked Mode

Wildlight Entertainment is pressing forward with its ambitious post-launch plans for Highguard, rolling out the game’s second major update today, February 6th. The Episode 2 patch introduces a shapeshifting new hero, a vertically-oriented map set among floating ruins, and the shooter’s first-ever ranked competitive mode — all arriving less than two weeks after the game’s January 26th launch, as promised in the studio’s 2026 content roadmap.

The headlining addition is Ekon, the ninth Warden to join Highguard’s roster and easily its most unconventional. Rather than riding a separate mount like every other hero in the game, Ekon transforms entirely into a direwolf, gaining speed that outpaces all other mounts in the game. In wolf form, players get a third-person camera that lets them peer around cover, and they can lunge at enemies with a vicious bite attack before snapping back into human form to finish the fight. Ekon can also track opponents by following scent trails they leave behind, making him a relentless pursuer across any battlefield.

His kit leans heavily into the predator fantasy. A passive ability called Dread reveals the heartbeats of wounded enemies, highlighting them with pulsing indicators until they either heal or die. His ultimate ability is a ferocious howl that strikes fear into nearby opponents. For players who want a taste of the wolf aesthetic without committing to Ekon, Wildlight is also giving every player a free wolf mount to ride with any hero, as reported by Rock Paper Shotgun.

The update also debuts Skydrift, a striking new map built around ancient stone ruins, massive chain bridges, and a castle suspended above the clouds. Players will battle their way upward through the floating lost city using zip lines and platforming routes, and the map will be available in both the standard 3v3 and the recently added 5v5 playlists. Alongside Skydrift, Wildlight has introduced a ranked competitive mode, though it will be restricted to 3v3 matches for the time being. The studio believes trios offer the most tactical gameplay experience but says it is open to community feedback on potentially expanding ranked play to 5v5 in the future.

The ranked system features a progression ladder with seven distinct titles for players to climb through during timed competitive splits, with better rewards awaiting those who reach higher tiers. Beyond the marquee features, the Episode 2 patch also packs in a series of quality-of-life improvements to the loot system, including masterwork weapons appearing in red chests at points of interest and visual indicators on barrels containing ultimate chargers.

Highguard has faced an uphill battle since launch, with Steam player counts declining despite a brief spike when 5v5 mode was introduced. Still, Wildlight remains undeterred — the studio’s leadership has emphasized that player satisfaction matters more than raw numbers, and the rapid pace of meaningful updates suggests the team is committed to earning a loyal audience. With a small but enthusiastic community rallying behind the game’s unique blend of mounted combat and hero-based shooting, Episode 2 represents Wildlight’s strongest argument yet that Highguard deserves a longer look.
