Resident Evil Requiem Shatters Franchise Records With 6 Million Copies Sold in Under a Month

Capcom’s latest survival horror blockbuster, Resident Evil Requiem, has officially become the fastest-selling entry in the storied franchise’s three-decade history. According to a press release signed by Capcom President Haruhiro Tsujimoto, the game has surpassed 6 million units sold across all platforms — a staggering figure considering the title hasn’t even been on shelves for a full month yet. The milestone arrives just days after Capcom confirmed the game had already moved 5 million copies within its first week of availability.

To put Requiem’s velocity into perspective, previous mainline entries Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil Village have accumulated roughly 16.4 million and 13.5 million lifetime sales since launching in 2017 and 2021 respectively. The modern remakes have also performed impressively over the long haul, with the Resident Evil 2 remake leading the pack at over 18 million units. But none of those titles reached the 6-million mark as quickly as Requiem has, underscoring just how much momentum the franchise has built in recent years. The Resident Evil series overall has now shipped 183 million units since the original game debuted in 1996.

Capcom isn’t resting on its laurels, either. The publisher has confirmed that a major story expansion is currently in development, alongside a mysterious minigame slated for May and a photo mode arriving in a forthcoming update. In its official statement, Capcom pledged to “implement several measures” of ongoing support and additional content to keep players engaged well beyond the initial campaign, as reported by IGN.

The timing of Requiem’s success couldn’t be better for Capcom, as the Resident Evil franchise is set to celebrate its 30th anniversary on March 22, 2026. The company has teased a slate of commemorative events, including a collaboration between Universal Studios Japan and Resident Evil Requiem, as well as orchestral concert tours spanning Japan, the United States, and Europe. The deliberately vague language in Capcom’s announcement has also fueled speculation among fans about potential new game reveals or remake announcements tied to the celebration.

Not everyone has been able to fully enjoy Requiem’s scares, however. In an amusing twist, legendary game director Hideki Kamiya — who helmed the original Resident Evil 2 along with beloved titles like Devil May Cry and Bayonetta — has publicly called for a “non-scary mode” to be added to the game. Kamiya was filmed telling colleagues that he simply wants to enjoy the puzzles and combat without the horror elements keeping him up at night, a sentiment that may resonate with a wider audience than one might expect from the creator of some of gaming’s most intense action experiences.

Despite launching into an unusually crowded release window, Requiem has proven that the Resident Evil brand remains one of the most commercially potent forces in the industry. The game has climbed to the second-highest user score on Metacritic and fostered a thriving PC modding community. While it still has ground to cover before cracking Capcom’s all-time Platinum Titles list — where the Resident Evil 3 remake holds the tenth spot at 10.9 million units — few would bet against Requiem reaching those heights given its record-breaking trajectory.
