Stellar Blade Studio Shift Up Acquires Shinji Mikami’s Unbound, Teasing a ‘Masterpiece’ in the Making

South Korean powerhouse Shift Up, the studio behind the hit action game Stellar Blade, has acquired Unbound — the new company founded by legendary game designer Shinji Mikami, best known as the creator of Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, and Dino Crisis. The deal unites one of Asia’s fastest-rising developers with one of Japan’s most celebrated creative minds, and both sides are signaling enormous ambitions for what comes next.

Mikami established Unbound in 2022 after departing Tango Gameworks, the studio he originally founded and which was later shut down by Microsoft before being acquired and reopened by PUBG parent company Krafton. Until now, Unbound had remained fully independent and had not publicly revealed any projects. In a joint announcement video, Mikami and Shift Up CEO Hyung-Tae Kim explained that a shared creative philosophy brought them together. “We decided to aim for the same goals together,” the pair said. “At Unbound, we’re going to create a masterpiece of a game.”

While specific details about the upcoming project remain under wraps, Mikami offered a rare display of enthusiasm about his level of involvement. “For the first time in a while, I’ll be fully involved on-site to work on a fairly large game, and I’m really looking forward to it,” he said in the announcement. He also noted that his creative vision and the studio’s direction have never been more closely aligned, suggesting he intends this partnership to define the remainder of his career.

According to Shift Up’s official announcement, Unbound’s development philosophy centers on “parallel development” — working on smaller, experimental titles alongside a large-scale flagship project. The studio is focused on building original IPs for PC and console aimed at a global audience, and Shift Up plans to handle publishing duties directly, using the partnership to build out its own worldwide distribution capabilities.

The acquisition represents a significant strategic move for Shift Up, which has been on a steep upward trajectory since Stellar Blade surpassed three million copies sold in 2024. The company also has Project Spirits in development with publisher Level Infinite, and CEO Kim was recently honored with a Presidential Commendation at South Korea’s Korean Content Awards for his contributions to the nation’s games industry. Kim described working with Mikami as a dream realized: “I grew up playing games from Shinji Mikami, and to be here now working together is incredibly meaningful.”

The deal also highlights the growing clout of Asian game studios on the global stage, with Korean developers in particular enjoying a remarkable run of success. Colleagues at Unbound paint a picture of Mikami as an unusually hands-on leader — one team member noted that “he sits at a desk with us; you can just talk to him.” With a veteran creator re-energized and a hungry studio backing him, the partnership has the gaming world watching closely for whatever this new alliance produces.
