Overwatch’s Anran Gets a Face Lift Ahead of Season 2 After Players Demanded Change

Blizzard Entertainment has officially revealed a redesigned look for Overwatch hero Anran, responding directly to widespread community criticism that the character suffered from so-called ‘same-face syndrome.’ Players had complained that Anran’s in-game model looked far too similar to other feminine heroes on the roster and diverged noticeably from her appearance in the animated cinematic that introduced her. With Season 2 set to launch on April 14, Blizzard is hoping the refreshed design will put the controversy to rest.

Overwatch director Aaron Keller shared the updated design on social media, explaining that the team concentrated on refining Anran’s eyes, eyebrows, and mouth to move away from what he called the original ‘baby face’ expression. According to Eurogamer, Keller described the reworked Anran as ‘confident, determined, fierce, and a natural-born leader’ — qualities the team felt hadn’t come through strongly enough in her initial design. Subtle adjustments to her posture were also made to reinforce her presence as Wuyang’s formidable older sister.

The redesign effort traces back to early 2026, when Overwatch’s major revamp was otherwise considered a success. Anran’s appearance, however, became a lightning rod for criticism, with fans flooding forums and social media with side-by-side comparisons showing how closely she resembled heroes like Tracer and Juno. Blizzard acknowledged the feedback at the time and promised a rework, a move that was seen as a positive sign of the studio’s willingness to listen to its player base.

Anran’s voice performer, Fareeha, who had publicly supported the community’s push for a redesign, expressed gratitude for the changes. She praised the development team for delivering a more striking look, particularly given the technical constraints involved in modifying an already-released character with existing skins and animations. Her endorsement added a personal dimension to an update that was otherwise a matter of polygon tweaks and texture adjustments.

Community reaction to the reveal has been mixed but generally more positive than before. Some players feel the changes are too conservative and that Anran still doesn’t quite match her cinematic counterpart, while others appreciate the improvement and are ready to move forward. Blizzard appears to have taken a cautious approach, balancing the need for a more distinct face against the practical reality of preserving consistency across the character’s existing cosmetic items.

Looking ahead, Keller used the announcement as an opportunity to invite continued feedback, noting that five more heroes are planned for release throughout the year. A new character reveal is expected imminently as Blizzard builds momentum toward Season 2’s debut next week — a signal that the studio intends to keep the dialogue with its community open as Overwatch’s roster continues to expand.
