Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, the critically acclaimed RPG from French studio Sandfall Interactive, is celebrating its first birthday in style. The developer released a free anniversary update on April 24 that introduces new cosmetic haircuts for every playable character in the game, alongside a proud announcement that the title has now surpassed 8 million copies sold worldwide.
The update, version 1.5.5, lets players pick up anniversary hairstyles for Gustave, Verso, Maelle, Lune, Sciel, and Monoco from in-game Gestral Merchants. Gustave’s new look can be found near Stone Wave Cliffs, while the rest of the party’s fresh cuts are available near Grosse Tête on the world map. The styles lean toward the glamorous side — think red carpet rather than punk rock — fitting for a game that has spent the past year collecting awards at virtually every major ceremony, including a Best Game win at the BAFTAs.
Beyond its impressive sales figures, the RPG’s reach extends even further thanks to Xbox Game Pass, where it became the most downloaded new third-party title of 2025. Sandfall also shared that the game’s beloved soundtrack has been streamed over 617 million times. To sweeten the celebration, Expedition 33 is currently 20 percent off on Steam through April 27 for anyone who has yet to experience it.
The anniversary patch also addresses several minor bugs, including collision problems in various locations, an issue preventing rest points from opening during in-world dialogue, and a cheeky fix for the Danseuse outfit making the character menu “too obscur.” Some achievement descriptions were also adjusted for consistency, though Sandfall noted a brief hiccup with those changes that was quickly resolved.
The game’s remarkable trajectory is all the more impressive given that Expedition 33 was Sandfall Interactive’s debut title. It went on to claim more Game of the Year awards than any other game in history, surpassing the record previously held by Elden Ring. Creative director Guillaume Broche expressed gratitude toward the community, saying the past year had “felt like a dream” for the team. Sandfall also unveiled special anniversary merchandise, including a branded Breton shirt and a red beret crafted in collaboration with French fashion labels.
As for what comes next, Sandfall Interactive is already at work on its follow-up project. While official details remain scarce, early hints suggest the studio may return to the Clair Obscur universe for another adventure — a prospect that should delight the millions of fans who fell in love with its painterly world and inventive combat over the past year.
