May 26 Was Supposed to Be GTA 6 Launch Day — Instead, Fans Got Memes and a Six-Month Countdown

Monday marked what was once circled on every gamer’s calendar as the launch date for Grand Theft Auto VI. When Rockstar Games confirmed a delay from its original fall 2025 window, the studio pointed to May 26, 2026 as the new target. That date has now come and gone without a game to show for it, but the internet made sure the occasion didn’t pass quietly.

In a twist that fans were quick to point out, Rockstar’s pinned post on X (formerly Twitter) still features the second GTA 6 trailer — complete with the now-outdated May 26, 2026 release date prominently displayed. As IGN noted, this technically means Rockstar’s own official account still advertises today as launch day, a fact that spawned an avalanche of jokes from the community. Fans flooded social media with everything from fabricated review score roundups to AI-generated mock-ups of what YouTube’s front page might look like on the real launch day, and at least one dedicated soul even lined up outside a GameStop for the bit.

The reality, of course, is that Rockstar pushed the game back once again. The studio announced a firm release date of November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, asking fans for patience as it works to meet the extraordinary expectations surrounding the title. In its statement, Rockstar emphasized that its goal has always been to exceed player expectations, and that GTA 6 would be no exception. As GameSpot highlighted, the studio has a well-documented history of pushing back release dates on virtually every major title it has shipped.

Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick recently shed some light on just how far the schedule has shifted. In an interview, Zelnick described the November 19 date as roughly 18 months behind the game’s original internal target, suggesting GTA 6 was initially planned for somewhere around May 2025 — well before any public release window was ever announced. Zelnick has also reaffirmed confidence in the current date, leaving little room for speculation about further delays.

For those hoping the occasion might at least bring a fresh trailer or new screenshots, the wait continues. Rockstar has indicated that its marketing push for GTA 6 will begin this summer, but no specific dates have been shared. Zelnick has even publicly mused about whether a third trailer is strictly necessary, given the game’s already-massive visibility. Meanwhile, PC players remain without a confirmed version of the game, though Rockstar’s track record strongly suggests a PC port will follow the console launch.

With exactly six months now separating fans from the revised release date, the GTA 6 community finds itself in a familiar holding pattern — eager, restless, and more than willing to turn their frustration into comedy while they wait for what is arguably the most anticipated game in the industry’s history.
