Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Launches October 23 With Open Beta, Skips Game Pass Entirely

Activision has pulled the curtain back on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, confirming that the long-running franchise’s next installment will arrive on October 23, 2026. Developed under the leadership of series originator Infinity Ward, MW4 will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and notably Nintendo Switch 2 — marking the first time a Call of Duty title has appeared on a Nintendo console since 2013’s Ghosts on the Wii U. The timing is strategic: the game lands just 27 days before the massively anticipated GTA 6 launch on November 19, giving Activision a window to capture player attention before Rockstar dominates the conversation.

In a significant shift for Xbox players, Modern Warfare 4 will not be included in Xbox Game Pass at launch. Microsoft’s revised “windowing” strategy means new Call of Duty entries will no longer debut on Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass, instead arriving on the subscription service roughly a year after release. This represents a stark change from Microsoft’s earlier policy of day-one availability for all first-party titles and could affect early adoption, particularly given that 2025’s Black Ops 7 posted the series’ worst sales ranking since 2008.

Before the full release, Activision confirmed that an open beta will be available, though specific dates have not yet been announced. Based on the franchise’s history, the beta is expected to go live sometime in September or early October. Players who preorder the game will receive early access to the beta, which is guaranteed to run for at least two days — making a preorder the only route to an early taste of the action in the absence of Game Pass availability.

MW4’s single-player campaign takes the series in a fresh direction, setting its story on the Korean peninsula during a renewed conflict. Players will step into the boots of Private Park, a young and inexperienced soldier facing combat for the first time. While the narrative focuses on this ground-level perspective, familiar faces like Captain Price are expected to appear alongside the new cast. Activision has described the campaign as a story about overcoming impossible odds, blending the franchise’s signature spectacle with a more personal, grunt-level point of view.

On the multiplayer front, MW4 promises both new and returning modes, including a large-scale 10-versus-10 version of the fan-favorite Gun Game. The extraction-style DMZ mode is also making a comeback. The PC version, being developed by Beenox, has been singled out for extra attention, with Activision pledging deeper options for performance tuning, visual customization, and responsiveness — a clear bid to win over a community that has historically been vocal about optimization issues.

The game is being built by a sprawling coalition of studios including Sledgehammer Games, Treyarch, Raven Software, High Moon Studios, and several Activision support teams. With preorders not yet open and pricing still unannounced, all eyes will be on the coming months as Activision attempts to rebuild momentum for its flagship franchise ahead of what may be the most competitive holiday release window in gaming history.
