God of War Laufey Revealed: Faye’s Afterlife Journey Blends Classic and Modern Combat in a PS5 Exclusive

Sony Santa Monica pulled back the curtain on God of War Laufey during the latest State of Play showcase, unveiling a bold new direction for the franchise. Rather than continuing Kratos’s story or rewinding the clock, the studio is putting players in control of Faye — Kratos’s deceased wife — as she navigates a sprawling afterlife realm called the Everywhen. The 20-minute gameplay reveal showed off a world where dead gods from multiple mythologies clash for supremacy, setting the stage for what could be the franchise’s most ambitious narrative expansion yet.

Despite starring a character who died before the events of 2018’s God of War, the game is notably not a prequel. As IGN reported, game director Ariel Lawrence and creative lead Cory Barlog explained that picking up Faye’s story after her death offered far more creative potential than revisiting her past. Lawrence emphasized the importance of placing players in the same position of discovery as the protagonist, waking up in an unfamiliar world with no roadmap. Barlog added that narrative seeds planted as far back as 2018 — including Odin’s obsessive fear of what happens to gods after death — were always intended to blossom into this exploration of the afterlife.

On the gameplay front, Laufey appears to represent a meaningful departure from the weighty, Souls-inspired combat of the Norse era. According to Eurogamer, Sony Santa Monica is deliberately channeling the speed and acrobatic flair of the original Greek-era trilogy, blending it with the cinematic camera work and narrative depth of the more recent entries. The demo showcased dodge-counters, air juggles, ground slams, and combo grapples that drew comparisons to Devil May Cry — a notable shift from Kratos’s more grounded fighting style. The studio described the approach as injecting “old school, classic DNA” into a modern framework.

The reveal has generated a polarized response from the gaming community. As IGN’s roundup of internet reactions highlighted, some fans were enthusiastic about the fresh perspective and expanded mythology, while others expressed fatigue with the franchise formula and skepticism about Faye as a lead character. David Jaffe, one of the original God of War creators, was particularly blunt in his criticism, calling the footage “uninspired” and questioning whether the game would meet commercial expectations. Others took issue with the demo’s heavy use of scripted sequences and a perceived lack of innovation in core mechanics.

Adding another wrinkle to the conversation is the game’s platform exclusivity. As Rock Paper Shotgun noted, God of War Laufey is branded “only on PlayStation,” marking a reversal from Sony’s recent trend of bringing first-party titles to PC. This aligns with earlier Bloomberg reporting that Sony plans to keep its single-player exclusives off PC for the foreseeable future, a strategy seemingly aimed at reinforcing the value proposition of the PS5 hardware. Whether that stance holds long-term remains an open question, but for now, PC players will be watching from the sidelines.

God of War Laufey does not yet have a confirmed release date, but the depth of the gameplay showcase suggests development is well underway. With its mix of cross-mythological world-building, a protagonist the series has never let players embody before, and a combat system that bridges two distinct eras of the franchise, the game is clearly swinging for the fences — even if not everyone is convinced it will connect.
