Playground Games has shed new light on the scope of its highly anticipated Fable reboot, revealing that the main storyline will clock in at roughly 15 to 20 hours. The details emerged during a group Q&A session at Gamescom 2026, where the development team fielded questions about what players can expect when the game arrives early next year.
Associate game director Will Kennedy broke down the game’s content into distinct tiers. Beyond the mainline quest experience, players can look forward to an additional 15 to 20 hours of side quests and open-world exploration, effectively doubling the overall playtime for those who want to venture off the beaten path. That puts the total structured content at somewhere between 30 and 40 hours, a substantial offering for an action RPG, as reported by Eurogamer and GameSpot.
On top of the quests, the developers emphasized that Fable’s life simulation systems — which include romanceable NPCs, reactive character personalities, and morality-driven interactions — are designed to keep players engaged indefinitely. When one attendee suggested the game sounded modest in scale, fellow associate game director Craig Littler pushed back, noting that players can “literally play it forever” thanks to these open-ended systems.
Playground Games has ambitious goals for its NPC ecosystem, boasting around 1,000 unique characters that respond to player choices and can be romanced. Whether the studio can deliver on those lofty promises remains to be seen, though early hands-on impressions from journalists who played the game over the summer have been encouraging. Previews praised the title for capturing the spirit of the original Fable series — described as silly, crass, and unmistakably British — while building on it with modern open-world design.
The reboot was originally slated for a 2026 release but was pushed back to avoid competing in a crowded launch window. Fable is now set to arrive on February 23, 2027, for Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PC.
