Double Fine Launches Kickstarter for New Game Jam, Dangles Brütal Legend 2 at a $100 Million Stretch Goal

Double Fine Productions, the studio behind Psychonauts and Costume Quest, has returned to Kickstarter following its separation from Microsoft and Xbox — and it’s brought a tantalizing, if wildly improbable, promise with it. The developer says it will produce a sequel to its cult-classic 2009 heavy metal action game Brütal Legend if its new crowdfunding campaign reaches a staggering $100 million. The campaign, which is actually seeking a far more modest $400,000 to fund a two-week internal game jam called Amnesia Fortnight 2026, had already pulled in roughly $275,000 at the time of its launch weekend, with nearly a month left on the clock.

Amnesia Fortnight is a long-running Double Fine tradition in which team members pitch and prototype experimental game ideas over a rapid two-week sprint. Past editions of the event spawned fully realized titles like Costume Quest, Iron Brigade, and Stacking. This time around, more than 25 game concepts are being pitched, ranging from a tactical city builder with giant robot buildings to a co-op bar crawl that transforms into a fantasy dungeon crawler. Kickstarter backers will vote on which prototypes advance, and ultimately one will be selected as Double Fine’s next commercial release.

The $100 million Brütal Legend 2 stretch goal is almost certainly tongue-in-cheek — no video game Kickstarter has ever come remotely close to that figure. As GameSpot noted, even the most successful gaming crowdfunding campaigns top out in the single-digit millions, with Shenmue 3 raising $6.3 million and Double Fine’s own Broken Age bringing in $3.45 million. The lone outlier is Star Citizen, which has accumulated over $1 billion in crowdfunding across 14 years — though that game still lacks a release date. GameSpot cheekily pointed out that $100 million represents roughly 20% of the price of Valve co-founder Gabe Newell’s recent superyacht purchase.

Still, the tease raises genuine questions about Double Fine’s future plans. The studio confirmed on social media that it is actively working on larger game projects behind the scenes and that the Amnesia Fortnight campaign is designed to keep the team funded and creatively engaged while it secures backing for those bigger endeavors. Notably, when Double Fine parted ways with Microsoft, it retained the rights to its entire back catalog, meaning a Brütal Legend sequel is at least legally feasible. Just a year ago, the studio had stated none of its upcoming projects were sequels, but circumstances have shifted dramatically since the Xbox split.

The road ahead for Double Fine has not been without hardship. Following its departure from Microsoft, the studio carried out layoffs that affected roughly a quarter of its staff. The potential costs of a Brütal Legend sequel would also be substantial, given the original game’s extensive licensed soundtrack of rock and heavy metal classics. Adding to the challenge, several iconic figures who contributed to the first game — including Ozzy Osbourne, Lemmy Kilmister, and Tim Curry — have passed away in the intervening years.

For now, fans can browse the full slate of Amnesia Fortnight 2026 pitch videos on the Kickstarter page and back the campaign to vote on their favorites. Whether the Brütal Legend 2 stretch goal is a genuine aspiration or simply a knowing wink to the devoted fanbase, Double Fine appears determined to chart its own independent course — one experimental prototype at a time.
