Capcom delivered one of the biggest surprises of the September 2026 Nintendo Direct by confirming that Monster Hunter Wilds will launch on the Nintendo Switch 2 on December 4, 2026. The announcement kicked off the presentation and put to rest speculation that Switch 2 owners might have to wait until 2027 to experience the acclaimed action RPG on Nintendo’s newest hardware.
The Switch 2 edition of Monster Hunter Wilds will ship as a comprehensive package, bundling every free title update released since the game’s original launch. That means players will have immediate access to the Grand Hub, beloved returning monsters such as Mizutsune and Lagiacrus, the FINAL FANTASY XIV Online crossover event, and all other post-launch additions from day one, according to IGN.
Perhaps the most exciting feature for longtime fans of the franchise is the return of local wireless co-op play. As Eurogamer highlighted, the inclusion of local multiplayer harkens back to the series’ portable roots, letting hunters gather in the same room and team up without an internet connection. Full cross-platform online multiplayer will also be supported, ensuring Switch 2 players can join hunts with friends on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
Capcom also used the Direct to tease Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, the game’s first major expansion. The add-on promises a new hunting region, fresh story quests, and additional monsters to track down. While the expansion is slated for a 2027 release across all platforms, it remains unclear whether every version will launch simultaneously.
Monster Hunter Wilds originally debuted to strong critical reception, with reviewers praising its refined combat and dynamic open environments. The months of additional content updates since launch mean that newcomers picking up the Switch 2 version will be stepping into what is arguably the most complete iteration of the game available.
With a December release date, Monster Hunter Wilds is poised to be one of the marquee holiday titles for the Switch 2, giving Nintendo’s console a heavy-hitting third-party release heading into the end of the year.
