Fresh off a record-breaking launch that saw five million copies fly off shelves in under a week, Capcom is doubling down on Resident Evil Requiem with a slate of new content. Game director Koshi Nakanishi shared the news in a video message to fans on March 10, confirming that a major story expansion, a new minigame, and a long-awaited photo mode are all in the pipeline for the survival horror hit.
The most significant reveal is the story expansion, which Nakanishi says will “delve deeper into the world of Requiem.” While the director offered no specifics about which characters or settings the DLC will explore, he confirmed that development is actively underway and urged fans to be patient as the team works to deliver it. As GameSpot notes, post-launch story content has become a tradition for the series — Resident Evil 7 expanded on Chris Redfield’s story, while Village’s Shadows of Rose DLC followed Ethan Winters’ daughter — so the announcement is very much in keeping with Capcom’s playbook.
Before the expansion arrives, players can look forward to a couple of other additions. A photo mode is on the way first, followed by a mystery minigame slated for release around May. Nakanishi declined to elaborate on what the minigame entails, though IGN speculates it could be a new iteration of the fan-favorite Mercenaries mode, which has traditionally let players battle waves of enemies using various characters from each game’s roster.
The announcement also came with a healthy dose of humor. As Rock Paper Shotgun reports, Nakanishi playfully shuffled through a stack of fake DLC concepts before making the story expansion reveal. Among the gag pitches were a Leon Kennedy romance game titled “Forbidden Requiem,” a cat-themed version of the game, a barbecue add-on, and a gem-matching puzzle spinoff — all riffing on the passionate fan discourse that has surrounded the game since launch, particularly speculation about Leon’s mysterious romantic partner.
Requiem’s blockbuster performance has made it the biggest launch in Resident Evil history. According to Eurogamer, the game shattered the franchise’s concurrent player record on Steam and outpaced the sales trajectories of both the Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4 remakes. Capcom is also continuing to address technical issues on the PC version, with a recent patch targeting several performance problems.
With its commercial momentum showing no signs of slowing down and a robust post-launch roadmap now confirmed, Resident Evil Requiem appears poised to keep its grip on the survival horror throne for the foreseeable future. Fans eager for more details on the story expansion and minigame will have to sit tight, but Nakanishi’s message made one thing clear: Capcom intends to reward the community’s enthusiasm with plenty of additional content in the months ahead.
