Charlie Cox, best known for his role as Marvel’s Daredevil, has at long last sat down and played Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 — the critically acclaimed RPG in which he voiced the character Gustave. The actor had previously described himself as a “total fraud” whenever fans praised his work on the game, largely because he had never actually experienced it firsthand. Now, in a new interview with GamesRadar, Cox confirmed that he has finally given it a go, though he was quick to add a humble disclaimer about his gaming abilities.
Cox revealed that he has worked his way through the opening sections of the game, exploring the world, meeting characters, and absorbing the story — but he hasn’t come close to finishing it. “I’m not very good, because obviously, it’s a skill set, but I’ve played it,” the actor said. His candid self-assessment is hardly surprising given that his last meaningful gaming experience dates back to titles like Mario 64, FIFA 98, and GoldenEye 007.
The actor’s involvement with Clair Obscur was relatively limited compared to a traditional performance capture role. Cox recorded all of Gustave’s voice lines in roughly four hours, while French actor Maxence Cazorla handled the full motion capture performance separately. Cox has been consistently transparent about this division of labor, repeatedly crediting Cazorla as the true driving force behind the character’s on-screen presence. When he was nominated for Best Performance at The Game Awards 2025, Cox insisted the recognition really belonged to his motion capture counterpart.
Despite feeling underqualified to accept praise for the role, Cox has clearly been moved by his introduction to modern gaming. He expressed admiration for how far interactive storytelling has come since the days of simple arcade-style entertainment, describing today’s games as something akin to “a movie you get to participate in.” The layered narrative of Clair Obscur, in which players gradually uncover story details through exploration rather than exposition, left a strong impression on the actor.
The experience has evidently inspired Cox to pursue more work in the medium. He recently confirmed that he is attached to a new, unannounced video game project in which he will be “much more involved,” suggesting he may take on both voice acting and motion capture duties this time around. While details about the upcoming title remain under wraps, it is clear that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 opened a door that Cox is eager to walk through — even if he still needs a bit of practice with a controller.
