Pirate Survival Game Windrose Launches Into Early Access on April 14 With Co-Op Swashbuckling and Supernatural Foes

The seas are about to get a lot more dangerous. Windrose, the co-op pirate survival game that captured widespread attention during this year’s Steam Next Fest demo period, has officially confirmed its early access launch for April 14. The announcement came during the Triple-I Initiative Showcase, where developer Windrose Crew debuted a new trailer packed with naval combat, eerie enemies, and one surprisingly menacing flower boss.

Set in an alternate Age of Piracy, Windrose invites players to assemble a crew of custom buccaneers, take to the high seas aboard fully armed frigates, and explore procedurally generated biomes filled with hand-crafted dungeons and hidden secrets. The game blends ship-to-ship cannon battles and boarding parties with on-land survival mechanics, base building, and what the developers describe as “soulslite combat” against a rogues’ gallery of foes inspired by real historical figures and supernatural forces. According to GameSpot, the main story alone is expected to run between 50 and 70 hours once the game reaches its full release.

Windrose Crew now has the backing of Pocketpair, the studio behind the hit game Palworld, serving as publisher. The early access version will be available on Steam for $30, with a $40 Supporter Bundle also on offer that includes the base game and a collection of sea shanties recorded by folk musician Seán Dagher. Launch times span the globe, starting at 1 AM Pacific on April 14 and rolling out across every major time zone.

The fresh trailer showcased what players can expect beyond standard pirate fare. While battling rival ships and legendary figures like Blackbeard is firmly on the menu, the game gradually steers into stranger territory with cursed swamplands, bizarre plague creatures, and boss encounters that blur the line between history and dark fantasy. The climactic reveal featured a crew of pirates squaring off against a towering pink flower identified as the “High Priestess” — a supernatural threat that hints at the ancient evil lurking beneath the game’s swashbuckling surface.

The developers have estimated that early access will last between one and a half to two and a half years before a full 1.0 launch. During that period, they plan to double the game’s content with new biomes, bosses, ships, loot, and expanded story elements. Windrose is fully playable in solo offline mode or with friends in co-op, and it places heavy emphasis on player customization — from island strongholds to fine-tuned combat styles and a variety of vessels to command.

For those who want to test the waters before committing, a free demo remains available on Steam. As one of the platform’s most-wishlisted titles, Windrose appears poised to make a significant splash when it drops into early access next week.
