Sony Rolls Out Major PlayStation Portal Update With 1080p High Quality Mode and Streaming Improvements

Sony has released a significant new system software update for its PlayStation Portal remote player, bringing higher visual quality, improved cloud streaming features, and a smoother user experience overall. The update, which began rolling out on March 17, 2026, arrives alongside impressive growth numbers for the handheld device — Sony reports that cloud streaming monthly users have surged 162% year-over-year, with more than half of all Portal owners subscribing to PlayStation Plus Premium.

The headlining feature is a new 1080p High Quality mode, available for both Remote Play and Cloud Streaming sessions. This option delivers a noticeably higher bitrate than the existing 1080p Standard setting, resulting in sharper and more detailed visuals for players with strong enough internet connections. Users can activate the mode through the Quick Menu by navigating to Max Resolution and selecting the High Quality option, though a session restart is required for the change to take effect, as reported by IGN.

Beyond the resolution upgrade, Sony has packed in a series of quality-of-life improvements aimed at reducing friction during cloud streaming. Game bundle pages now feature a redesigned interface that lets players choose which specific title to stream, and in-game invitations will appear as on-screen notifications so users no longer risk missing them mid-session. The search screen has also been refined, with the on-screen keyboard now appearing immediately when entering the search function.

Trophy enthusiasts will appreciate the enhanced notification system, which now displays the trophy name and its associated image the moment it unlocks. Platinum trophies receive special treatment with a dedicated animation — a welcome fix that Eurogamer highlighted as addressing a pain point from earlier firmware, where checking unlocked trophies on the go was cumbersome and unintuitive.

Sony has also streamlined the initial setup process for newcomers. Players who do not yet have a PlayStation account can now create one and sign in more quickly thanks to an improved onboarding flow that supports QR code scanning from a mobile device. The Portal still requires a broadband Wi-Fi connection of at least 5 Mbps, with 15 Mbps recommended for optimal performance, and cloud streaming remains exclusive to PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers.

The update underscores Sony’s continued commitment to expanding the Portal’s capabilities well beyond its original launch as a simple remote play accessory in 2023. As senior product manager Takuro Fushimi noted, the device has become the most widely used platform for PS5 Remote Play, outpacing mobile, PC, and even the PS5 and PS4 consoles themselves — a testament to the growing appetite for flexible, on-the-go PlayStation gaming.
