Sony Rolls Out Major PS5 System Update With Trending Game Charts, Voice Chat Upgrades, and PSSR Enhancements

Sony has pushed out a notable new system software update for the PlayStation 5, delivering a collection of features that go well beyond the usual stability improvements. Update version 26.06-14.00.00 introduces community-focused additions, quality-of-life improvements for voice chat, and a visual upgrade enabled by default for PS5 Pro owners, as reported by IGN and GameSpot.

One of the most intriguing additions is a new Community Activity widget on the PS5’s Welcome Hub that surfaces two data-driven game lists. “Trending Now” highlights ten multiplayer titles or modes experiencing a spike in player interest, aimed at spotlighting new launches and major content drops. “Top 10” ranks the most popular games over the past week within each user’s country or region. Sony has historically kept this kind of popularity data under wraps, making it a rare window into what the broader PlayStation community is actually playing — though the company has not clarified whether rankings are based on total players, peak concurrent users, or some other metric.

PS5 Pro owners will notice that the Enhance PSSR Image Quality setting is now switched on by default following the update. The feature applies Sony’s improved PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution upscaling technology even to games that were built with the earlier version of PSSR, resulting in sharper and cleaner visuals across supported titles. Users who prefer the previous rendering behavior can manually disable the option through the console’s Screen and Video settings.

Voice chat also receives a practical upgrade: players can now display the names of whoever is currently speaking during a group conversation. The feature requires manual activation through the voice chat card in the control center, and users can customize where the speaker indicator appears on screen. It is a small but welcome change for anyone juggling communication in multiplayer sessions where identifying speakers by voice alone can be difficult.

Additional tweaks in the update include changes to Bluetooth functionality on PS5 and PS5 Pro consoles in select regions. Specifically, disabling Bluetooth through the accessories settings will now prevent the console from entering rest mode and will deactivate HDMI Device Link. The update also includes the standard round of system stability and performance improvements.

The firmware arrives at a busy moment for PlayStation, with major titles like Marvel’s Wolverine already on shelves and anticipated releases such as Grand Theft Auto 6 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on the horizon. The new trending and popularity features could prove particularly useful as players look to discover where the action is during a packed release calendar.
