Xbox in Upheaval: Sarah Bond Resigns as President Following Phil Spencer’s Retirement and Asha Sharma’s Appointment

Microsoft’s gaming division is undergoing its most significant leadership shakeup in years. Phil Spencer, the longtime head of Xbox who served as Microsoft Gaming CEO, is stepping down into retirement, while Xbox President Sarah Bond has resigned from the company after more than eight years with the brand. Taking the reins is Asha Sharma, who previously led Microsoft’s CoreAI product division, with Matt Booty being elevated to executive vice president and chief content officer of Xbox.

Bond’s departure has drawn particular attention due to the unusual way it was communicated. As IGN reported, her exit was not announced independently but was instead buried several paragraphs into Spencer’s own farewell statement, well below the headline news of Sharma’s appointment. Neither Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Sharma, nor Booty referenced Bond’s departure in their own public remarks, and even veteran Xbox executive Aaron Greenberg — who posted extensively about both Spencer’s retirement and Sharma’s promotion — made no mention of Bond at all.

Bond, who had long been viewed as Spencer’s natural successor at the helm of Xbox, eventually published her own statement hours later on LinkedIn. In the message, she expressed pride in the work accomplished during her tenure, citing the growth of PC and cloud gaming, progress on the next Xbox console, and the successful integration of Activision Blizzard following its landmark acquisition. She framed her exit as a personal choice, writing that she had “decided this is the right time for me to take my next step, both personally and professionally,” though she offered no further details on her reasons for leaving.

Her note also struck a gracious tone toward Sharma, revealing that the two had spent several weeks planning the transition together. Bond praised Sharma’s background in technology and commerce and expressed confidence in her ability to lead Xbox forward. Bond added that she would stay on temporarily as a special advisor to help ensure continuity during the handover. She also thanked Spencer for his mentorship and Nadella for his support throughout her time at Microsoft.

The leadership reshuffle has sent ripples across the gaming industry, with developers and industry veterans reacting publicly to the departures. Bond joined Xbox in 2017 as corporate vice president of business development and partnerships, later overseeing game creator experience and ecosystem strategy before being named Xbox President in 2022. During her tenure, she played a central role in expanding Game Pass, advancing cloud gaming, and shepherding the company through the massive Activision Blizzard deal.

With Sharma now at the helm — bringing deep platform-building expertise but limited gaming industry experience — Xbox enters a new and uncertain chapter. The appointment has already prompted questions from fans and observers about the direction of the brand, particularly given Sharma’s recent focus on AI products at Microsoft. How she balances the expectations of a passionate gaming community with Microsoft’s broader technology ambitions will be one of the defining storylines in the industry in the months ahead.
