In a dramatic shakeup that few saw coming, Hideo Kojima’s highly anticipated action-espionage game Physint has changed hands from PlayStation to Xbox. The title, first announced as a PlayStation exclusive in 2024, will now be published by Microsoft’s gaming division after Sony quietly moved to cancel the project earlier this summer. The shift means that both of Kojima Productions’ upcoming titles — Physint and the horror game OD — are now under the Xbox umbrella, marking a striking departure from the legendary designer’s decades-long association with PlayStation.
The two companies offered notably different accounts of what transpired. PlayStation framed the split as a mutual and respectful decision, stating that it had “made the difficult decision to step away” from the collaboration while expressing continued admiration for Kojima’s creative vision. Kojima himself, however, painted a far less cordial picture. In a statement shared on social media, the director revealed that PlayStation Studios had “unexpectedly” informed him in mid-June that it intended to cancel Physint outright, sending his team on a frantic three-month search for a new publishing partner.
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma welcomed the partnership in a post on Xbox Wire, saying the company was “honored” that Kojima chose Xbox and praising his willingness to challenge creative conventions. According to Eurogamer, Kojima is expected to be a primary focus of Sharma’s broader vision for the Xbox platform. Microsoft also signaled that its relationship with Kojima Productions would extend beyond games, with plans to collaborate on film and television projects that bring new stories to wider audiences.
The reasons behind PlayStation’s decision to abandon Physint remain officially undisclosed, but the move fits a pattern of Sony pulling back from riskier bets in recent years. As Rock Paper Shotgun noted, Sony has been left cautious after a series of costly live-service missteps, while Microsoft has been reshaping its own first-party strategy following studio closures and layoffs. For PC gamers, the switch to Xbox publishing may actually be welcome news, as Microsoft’s titles are now routinely released on Windows alongside console versions.
Physint is described by Kojima as his return to the kind of action-espionage gameplay that defined the Metal Gear Solid series. The game aims to use cutting-edge technology to blur the boundary between cinema and interactive entertainment. Though still believed to be in a relatively early stage of development, Kojima confirmed earlier this year that casting, scanning, and performance capture sessions are set to begin in late 2026, with actors including Charlee Fraser, Don Lee, and Minami Hamabe reportedly attached to the project.
Kojima reassured fans that despite the turbulent behind-the-scenes changes, Physint’s development is continuing without interruption. “Please rest assured that development of Physint, our genre-defining action-espionage title, is ongoing and will continue moving forward,” he wrote. Whether the partnership with Xbox will give Kojima the creative runway he needs to realize his ambitious vision remains to be seen, but for now, the project has survived what could have been a fatal blow.
